New York State is one of 45 states that have adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The Rockland BOCES’ Network Team attends all training the NYSED provides on the CCSS and provides professional development to our region.
This year, we will deepen our work with teachers on the Common Core State Standards – aligning and building curriculum maps, and ensuring that formative assessments assess student learning and inform instruction so that every student achieves growth. We will work with teachers on developing strategies to promote cognitive engagement and constructivist thinking, and we will assist them in deepening their understanding of the rubrics they are using as part of the teacher evaluation process.
Focus on providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college, other post-secondary training and careers.
Actively engage students in learning, requiring them to demonstrate their mastery of content and focus on critical thinking, problem solving and real world application of skills.
Cover fewer topics at each grade level in order to focus on a greater depth of learning.
Provide grade-level goals that offer coherent progression from
grade to grade.
Establish a foundation to work collaboratively across content disciplines, schools, districts and states to share resources, expertise, curricular tools and professional development.
